Sir Alexander Fleming is a Scottish physician and microbiologist famous for discovering the world's first widely effective lysozyme and antibiotic antibiotic, which he named penicillin. He discovered lysozyme from his runny nose in 1922, and with it a bacteria he named Micrococcus Lysodeikticus, later renamed Micrococcus luteus. His discovery of what would later be called benzylpenicillin from the Penicillium rubens mold in 1928, has been described as "the greatest victory ever over the disease". For this discovery, he shared the 1945 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain. Fleming was knighted for his scientific achievements in 1944. In 1999 he was named one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century by Time magazine.
